The Sweet Kiss of Inspiration
By Rebecca Blanco
This season, we take a look at the Gustav Klimt inspired looks on the runways.
Gustav Klimt was constantly criticized for being overtly sexual and erotic with his portrayal of women, but Oscar de la Renta seems to find the perfect balance of Klimt’s sensual woman and his own brand of elegance for his Fall 08 collection.
The Kiss has long been a favorite piece of mine (I actually have it hanging in my bedroom), and as a once-upon-a-time design student, I would often draw inspiration from the ornate, adorned 2-dimensional spaces. I would sit for hours studying the intricate abstract patterns Klimt so painstakingly orchestrated.

How beautifully they all compliment each other in color and design. It’s the perfect source of design inspiration. I’m so excited to see such an amazing designer (de la Renta, no less), drawing upon the same inspiration and finding the same things I find to be mesmerizing intriguing.
And perhaps it’s because I’ve got Klimt on the mind, but when I saw Sofia Sanchez & Mongiello’s “Aqua Caliente” with Coco Rocha, I immediately thought of Klimt’s bewegtes wasser sfondo. The editorial spred is for Numero magazine’s June Issue and definitely has the sexual spirit of Klimt’s flowery water nymphs. Klimt inspired or not, I do love these steamy bathtub shots.
