Conversations About Life and Love with Lily, age 4

Listening to “Drunk” by Rose Polenzani.

Lily: What’s this song about?
Me: Um, well, she’s singing about a boy who hurt her feelings.
Lily: Why?
Me: He lied, and that wasn’t nice.
Lily: Why?
Me: Um, I don’t know.
Lily: Well, maybe he just didn’t want to marry her.

Sitting on our kitchen counter, eating popsicles

Lily: Mama, I KNOW, let’s tell each other things that are private. Like, totally personal.
Me: Totally personal?
Lily: No, not like when you’re naked in front of a stranger, like secrets.
Me: Oh. Okay. You go first.
Lily:  I. Want. A. Baby. Brother!
Me: Hm.
Lily: Now you go. Tell me a secret.
Me: Um…my favorite color is orange.
Lily: Whoa, mama; now THAT is personal.

Listening to “Sampson” by Regina Spektor

Lily: What’s this song about?
Me: She’s singing about her boyfriend, his name is Sampson.
Lily: What’s she singing about Sampson?
Me: That she loved him first. And now he doesn’t love her.
Lily: Well, he’ll probably love her later. Like tomorrow. Yeah, probably.

After A Breakup

Me:  I have to tell you something, Babe.  Xxxxx and I decided not to date anymore. He is not going to be my boyfriend, and I’m not going to be his girlfriend.
Lily: Why?
Me: Well, it’s hard sometimes, to be boyfriend and girlfriend, and I want to have more time to spend with you!
Lily: Yeah. And because boys are BORRRING.

Listening to Jenny Lewis and The Watson Twins

Lily: What’s this girl singing about?
Me: Um…uh. She’s singing about telling the truth.
Lily: Why? What does that mean?
Me: Uh….she is singing that you shouldn’t lie. Its not nice.
Lily: Because then you have to have a time-out?
Me: Exactly.
