Eve and Bob: “What Happened Next” or, Text Messages Are the New Post-It”

By Eve Sturges

Text MessageI would like to begin this post by apologizing to my readers. I have been on a hiatus of grand proportions, the likes of which never before seen, and excuses for which are completely and utterly UNforgivable. Sorrrrrry.

So, let’s get to it, shall we?

No, WAIT: Thank you to all who sent me encouragement and suggestions. Mostly, you all wanted me to send the email, throwing caution to the wind!

What really happened: I did not send the email (See Date #0). Instead, very uninteresting, albeit more technologically advanced, exchanges were had via “instant messenger.” I said I wanted to see him. “I would like to see you again.” He responded, seconds later. “Me too.” And so on, and so forth. Four weeks passed before a face to face meeting actually occurred. We had a very nice time, I did indeed reveal minor vulnerabilities, and I was feeling optimistic.

In the Land of Lameness

By Jenn Zipp

Land of Lameness So I took a vacation during the holidays. In the land of lameness.

I don’t know why my PMS lasts for a good 3 months straight during the winter. It could be that I’m part bear and I like to hibernate. It could be the weather. But I just think for the past few years, I’ve been so completely jaded by the holidays, consumerism, and the lost of all the magic that it once held when I was a kid.
That might also have something to do with my mother’s odd gift giving during Christmas. Two years ago, when my sister suffered a miscarriage, my mother gave her a maternity dress. This year, my bald sister due to chemotherapy received an economy sized bottle of shampoo and conditioner from “Santa”. I’m really waiting for the year that I lose my legs in a freak accident and she buys me a pair of slacks.

If there’s one good thing about the holidays, it’s that they end. And a new year begins.

Anyway… we’re back. We’re gonna try to be better this year.

The First Night of Fall

By Christopher Longoria

Hear me this night
for this night i will be delivered
into the hands of a peaceful solitude.

A silent surrender
before a city’s chaos
and body politic
that in its rush to finish forgets
there is no end.

By Jenn Zipp

Unsexy Halloween

There’s all this talk about Halloween at work. Everyone wants to dress up.
”I want to be sexy. I want to be Rihanna.”
”I want to be a ballerina… but a sexy ballerina.”
”I’m going as Pocahontas… but sexy Pocahontas.”
”What about an ostrich… but a sexy ostrich?”
”I think I’m going as Samantha Ronson… but a sexy Samantha Ronson.”

Autumn Analog

By Mark Szakonyi

Autumn Analog This compilation isn’t analog, but it is about autumn. The only season that matters. Spring can be all what the poets write, but it also can be quite annoying. We’re doing it again. The whole life thing is happening again. You know how this ends. The ground itself feels the urges of growth and is exhausted from the predictability, John Updike wrote. Summer makes the mind a bit fuzzier, and that’s not necessarily a negative, but it surely isn’t a merit. Yes, autumn is dependent on winter, but it is still more than its successor. It is the twilight that separates both the intensities of summer and winter, and not full of regular spawning like spring. It is the most gloriously sensible time of the year. In autumn, everything is sharper, yet warmer. It’s analog in a way.

Eve and Bob: Date #0

By Eve Sturges

email

Email: More Mature Than Text Messaging

I wrote this today:

Bob.

I’ll just get to the point.

I haven’t said “I love you” to a man in 5 years.  I want to say it to you.

I’m not sure if you’re good for me, but I think you’re the one for me.

Let me know where to go from here.

-Eve

Granite Mirror Gazing

By Abbey Leroux

Granite Mirror Gazing

“James!” I yell as loud as I can, hoping the wind will be on my side for once and carry my voice upward. I wait as its howling response assaults my ears and pushes my body to the side. “James!” I call again.

“Yeah, hold on!”

Okay. Faintly through the rush of wind in my ears, I can hear my own panting breath. I glance down at my cramped toes, checking to see it my footing looks as stable as it feels.
Stable is an overstatement, to be sure. The sight of the tip-toes of my green climbing shoes pressing down on two slivers of granite, while a little less than a thousand feet of space dominates the view between my feet, does not inspire as much confidence as I would have liked.

Homecoming

By Lauren Smith

homecomingSometimes it’ll happen while I’m eating a bagel. It’ll hit me while I’m flipping a light switch. On occasion the feeling will come over me while I’m just picking my nose. I could be doing the most mundane thing and suddenly the thought will come, “Wow I’m [blank] in New York City.” Tonight I was just walking up to 5F and right as floor 3 came into view I stopped just a bit and became fully aware of where I was and what I was doing there.
