I can't believe it's not...better

Theresa Anderrson @ Amnesia, 853 Valencia St.

By Camille Ikalina-Robles

Theresa Anderson

Swedish-born chanteuse Theresa Anderrson makes a stop in San Francisco this Saturday, September 13th at Amnesia in the Mission. The songstress is seriously talented and will grace the stage with her impressive one-woman show, which has garnered her fans across the world wide web and packed houses in venues all over New York. Just check out her video below where she performs “Na Na Na” in the middle of her kitchen. The tour is in support of her recently released album, Hummingbird Go! (Basin Street Records). Join me and Better Blog editor Jenn Zipp at the show for some indie pop-soul goodness, and maybe then you can claim you knew her way back when she used to play cozy neighborhood bars.

The Sweet Kiss of Inspiration

By Rebecca Blanco

This season, we take a look at the Gustav Klimt inspired looks on the runways.

Klimt

Gustav Klimt was constantly criticized for being overtly sexual and erotic with his portrayal of women, but Oscar de la Renta seems to find the perfect balance of Klimt’s sensual woman and his own brand of elegance for his Fall 08 collection.

Resurrecting the Boy Band

By Jenn Zipp

The return of the Boy Band.
And I’m not talking about anything from mastermind Lou Perlman (who, by the way, is Big Tony’s bitch right now in the slammer… that’s what money laundering will get you). There’s a new breed of boy band in town.

Resurrecting the Boyband

They play instruments (whaaa-?), they don’t do choreographed dances (no!) and your mother wouldn’t trust them as your senior prom date (you don’t say!). No, the new breed of boy band is dirtier, grimier, and dead sexier.
I didn’t jump on the Backstreet Boy Bandwagon or prayed to a Justin Timberlake altar at the foot of my bed in high school. I was too busy trying not to conform. So at the age of 26, when I’m just too tired to give a shit about being “mainstream”, I’m taking this resurrection of boy bands seriously. (However, I do have fits occasionally when I’ve come to the realization that these bands are no longer my bands. I hate sharing my music with the population.)
I think deep down inside, there’s some really good music in there… somewhere.

Model Citizen

By Rebecca Blanco

Model Sasha Pivovarova showed up to the Anna Sui show dressed like the kid sister’s version of Kurt Cobain. She switched out that tired flannel button up with pastel pinks and floral prints, modernizing her grunge-inspired look and making her just a little bit cooler.

It Seams Better: East meets West

By Rebecca

Our in-house fashion editor, Rebecca gives us the latest on what’s hot on the streets of two rival Fashion capitals in the world.

Tokyo Street Fashion

Japan is not just Harajuku girls and Gothic Lolitas. See culprits below. Though I must admit, the four Gothic girls pictured do look pretty good. Rainbow Brite Angel and her Scrunchie Advocate sidekick do, however, push the realm of anything I’d ever wear. Then again, they’d probably just bring up my awkward teenage nothing-left-to-the-imagination tennis skirt days and we’d call it even.

Getting Away With Murder: The Glory that is Thrifting

By Jenn Zipp

The Glory That is Thrifting I’m not one of those girls that reminisce about shopping with my mother growing up. I have friends that gush over the wonderful, fond memories of going to Montgomery Ward with their mothers on Sunday afternoons after church, of browsing the perfume counters and having their first sniff of Chanel no. 5, of realizing the beauty of being a woman while watching their mothers shop for underpants at Macy’s.
No. I don’t have those memories. The only memory I have of shopping with my mother is being dragged through Chinatown trying to hold my breath in the fish markets. (She’s lucky I didn’t pass out.) My clothes came from a garbage bag kept in the closet stuffed with hand-me-down t-shirts from my sisters (they were teenagers in the 80s. While everyone in junior high was sporting their flannel and denim overalls, I was the only one sporting the Duran Duran Girls On Film Tour t-shirt.  If only I knew then how retro I was…)

Eat and Run

By Kjersti Egerdahl

Eat and Run

Get outside while it’s not raining and enjoy the street foods of Seattle.

Seattleites are notoriously outdoorsy (as in hiking boots at the opera), so it makes perfect sense that some of the best cheap food in the city can’t be contained in four walls. We need our elbow room out here, and we’d rather eat our wild salmon on the sidewalk, thanks. Now that it’s finally the time of year when it’s safe for everyone to put away the Gore-Tex (except for those die-hard kayakers), go find yourself someplace to snack in the sun.

My Fair Lady

By Rebecca

My Fair Lady

Whenever I go shopping, I always find myself gravitating toward the dresses. Not the practical everyday-dresses, but the elaborate cocktail dresses you see the Sex and the City girls in. Though these dresses are often way too formal for the event I am attending, I always end up getting it anyway because it’s just too pretty to pass up. The result? A closet packed of dresses waiting to be worn!
